Now that you have your domain name, it’s well worth linking it to your email address.

For example, a website with the domain name getyourselfonline.co.nz is matched with an email address of info@getyourselfonline.co.nz.

The task doesn’t belong in the “too hard basket”, because it isn’t that difficult to achieve. And, when you link your email to your new domain name:

  1. Customers think it’s professional looking
  2. It’s portable and you can move to a different email provider when you need to
  3. Every email you send works as an advertisement for your business and a reminder of your services.
  4. Staff members get a professional email address.

What you need to do in linking your domain name to an email address:

Contact your registrar or web hosting company to add an email facility. Alternatively, you could use an independent email solution, but you may need some help from a technical person.

Once you’ve got an email address, test it to make sure that you can send and receive from it. Lastly, you’ll need to transition any emails you receive into your old account to your new one. The easiest way to do this is by following these basic steps:

  1. Put a forward function from your old email address to the new domain name based email.  Don't stop the old email address just yet!
  2. Set up a rule in your email software to pop these messages to go to a specific folder in your system.
  3. As you receive emails into this folder advise the sender of your change of email address (if you find someone technically-savvy you can probably make this happen automatically).
  4. After a time, perhaps a few months, when you will feel secure that all your old contacts are now using your new domain related email address you can cancel your old email address.
  5. As part of your integrated marketing activities you should update all your business cards, letterheads, signs, etc. with your new domain based email.

If you don’t have a domain name – it’s time to get one!

If you don’t have a domain name yet, you’ll first need to register one. You can do a search for available domain names and Registrars here.

Once that’s done come back to this page and follow all the steps outlined in the section above.
